Department of Materials Science and Engineering

The research activities of the department cover most of the important and advanced topics in materials science and engineering, with an emphasis on structure, properties, and processing of materials. The materials systems which are studied include: metals and alloys, ceramic materials, polymers, composites, electronic materials, thin films, nanomaterials, biomaterials, and amorphous materials.

Each of the research topics is at the forefront of science and materials engineering, and the research is often conducted in collaboration with industry, and with other scientists in Israel and abroad. The research in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering is conducted by 16 faculty members, seven professor emeriti, 18 research associates, five to ten post-doctoral research associates, and approximately 100 graduate students. Most of the research activities at the Department of Materials Science & Engineering are conducted within the framework of the Materials Research Center.

Coordinator Prof. Boaz Pokroy

Prof. Boaz Pokroy

Prof. Boaz Pokroy is currently an Assistant Prof. at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Technion Haifa Israel since 2009. Prior to that he did his Post Doc as a Fulbright scholar in the lab of Prof. Joanna Aizenberg at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Harvard University, Cambridge MA USA. The research of Pokroy focuses on biomineralization and bio-inspired surface engineering. He studies the structure of bio-minerals on the atomic, nano and meso-scales using state of the art high-resolution characterization techniques (synchrotron diffraction and aberration corrected TEM). His lab also develops novel bio-inspired materials such as semiconductors whose band gap can be tuned by the incorporation of intracrystalline biological molecules and superoleophobic surfaces. Pokroy has published close to 50 papers two of which are in science, two in nature materials, two in PNAS, several in advanced materials and more. He was awarded the prestigious ERC starting grant in 2013.
